Why mobile first is important!

So, you know that one person who doesn’t use a computer or tablet on a regular basis? Whether they are shopping for groceries or looking for a new restaurant, checking work emails and updating the calendar, there is always that person who does it all on the super mini computer we all have in our pockets. In fact, according to Statista(1) 49.7% of worldwide web page traffic was accessed through a mobile device in 2017. We may as well call that an even half. Half of all web page traffic, search, clicks, pings, checks, cookie accepting, is done on a mobile device. Now, imagine that the page they are trying to load, is not mobile friendly. Would you continue on that page? Of course there’s a statistic on that; 8 out of 10 consumers say they would stop engaging with a site that did not load correctly on their mobile device.(2) That’s a potentially damaging number! Even worse is that most of those said they wouldn’t return to the site in the near future. So, what does all this mean for you, the small business owner? It means that when you start considering taking your business online, you have to seriously consider that your site needs to not only looks great on your desktop, it needs to be a “Mobile First” site. It needs to load fast, be responsive, look smooth as it scrolls through and have contact information readily available at a first glance. Personally, I am a mobile first kinda girl whereas my husband is all about his desktop view, and it is amazing how we access completely different information based on the device we are searching from! So, don’t get left out of the search while I am out and about or sitting on the couch, (because 17% of small businesses will)(2)
